OAKLAND — Planet Fitness, buoyed by optimism over the slow reopening of California’s battered economy in the wake of coronavirus-linked business shutdowns, has opened its newest location in Oakland, the company said Thursday.
The new site for Planet Fitness totals 21,000 square feet and is in an old supermarket at 900 Market St. in Oakland. Planet Fitness has been open for a few weeks at this location.
“The response from the community has been really great,” said Cara Pagan, senior regional manager for Planet Fitness. “We are nestled right into a residential area. A lot of our members live close by. Almost all of our team members live within walking distance.”
The grand opening of the new Planet Fitness in Oakland marks the sixth location the health club has opened in California during 2021.
“Potential members and the community are very anxious to get back to some sense of normalcy,” Pagan said. “They are seeking physical health, mental health, the chance to be able to do something during the day.”
Until California reopens completely, Planet Fitness will operate with restricted hours. The hours are Monday-through-Friday, 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., she said.
“We will return to a 24-hour schedule when it is allowed,” Pagan said.
Planet Fitness now operates 160 locations in California, the company said.
“Our new Oakland location is a standard size and has all of the amenities that you would expect,” Pagan said. “We will have cardio, full strength training, full locker rooms, a 30-minute circuit, total body enhancement center, tanning beds, hydro-massage bed, and massage chairs. It’s a fully equipped facility for our members.”
Among the COVID-influenced safety protocols at Planet Fitness locations, including the new Oakland site:
— Crowd meter. The Planet Fitness Crowd Meter gives members the ability to check club capacity on the Planet Fitness app or website in real-time.
— Physical Distancing. Large facilities can shut down pieces of cardio equipment to mandate physical distancing and to meet capacity limits.
— Sanitization. Requirements for regular sanitization have been shown to help keep fitness centers safe.
— Temperature checks. Planet Fitness conducts daily temperature tests of every employee entering the facility.
The new Oakland site has a staff of 12 people, Pagan said.
Hiring in this type of business would be in sharp contrast to the dreadful fortunes for the fitness industry, which is part of the badly wounded arts, entertainment, and recreation sector.
During the 12 months that ended in March, arts, entertainment, and recreation employers jettisoned 25,000 jobs, according to this news organization’s analysis of seasonally adjusted figures compiled by Beacon Economics and Center for Economic Forecasting.
“That is one of the best parts of this club opening,” Pagan said. “We have created more jobs for the community. The team members we have hired have expressed that they are glad to be back working again.”
